Introduce blends after students are fluent with CVC words. Start with initial blends, which are easier to hear than final blends. Begin with s-blends (sl, sn, sp, st, sw) because the /s/ sound is continuous and easy to stretch. Then move to l-blends (bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl) and r-blends (br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr). Teach two or three blends at a time and practice extensively before adding more. A common error is students dropping one letter of the blend (reading 'sop' instead of 'stop') — if this happens, have them tap out each sound on their fingers before blending. Use word chains to build decoding agility: lap → clap → clam → clamp. Always teach blends in the context of whole words, not in isolation. Final blends (-nd, -nk, -nt, -mp) are harder because students tend to drop the final consonant. Practice final blends with word pairs: 'ten' vs. 'tent,' 'bum' vs. 'bump.' Give students decodable texts that feature the blends they have learned so they can practice reading blends in connected text, not just isolated word lists.
Standards Alignment
Orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds, including consonant blends (1); isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds in spoken single-syllable words (1); decode regularly spelled one-syllable words (1); recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words (1); distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words (2).
