Introduce long vowels after students fluently decode short vowel CVC words. Start with the silent-e (CVCe) pattern because it is the most consistent and visually distinctive. Teach it as 'the e at the end makes the vowel say its name' and use word pairs to illustrate the contrast: cap/cape, pin/pine, hop/hope, cub/cube. Word chains that alternate between CVC and CVCe words (tap → tape → rip → ripe) build flexibility. Next, introduce vowel teams. The key principle is 'when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking' — this works for many teams (ai, ay, ea, ee, oa) but has exceptions, so teach it as a starting strategy, not an absolute rule. Teach the most common spelling for each long vowel sound first (a_e and ai for long a, ee and ea for long e, i_e for long i, o_e and oa for long o), then introduce less common patterns. Vowel team sorts — giving students a list of long-a words and asking them to sort by spelling pattern (a_e, ai, ay) — build pattern awareness. Dictation exercises where students spell long vowel words from spoken sounds reinforce encoding. Always contrast long and short vowel sounds within the same lesson to sharpen discrimination.
