Effective spelling instruction teaches patterns, not just individual words. Organize spelling lists around a common pattern (e.g., all long-a words: cake, rain, play, break) so students learn the rule behind the words and can apply it to new words. The look-cover-write-check method is a proven study strategy: the student looks at the word carefully, covers it, writes it from memory, then checks. Repeat for missed words. Have students sort their spelling words by pattern to reinforce the underlying rule. Include 2-3 'challenge words' that extend the pattern for advanced spellers. Dictation sentences that include multiple spelling words in context help students transfer spelling accuracy from isolated word lists to real writing. When students misspell a word, avoid simply marking it wrong — have them identify the part that is incorrect and write the correct spelling three times. Word study notebooks where students record new patterns, rules, and personal 'demon words' (words they consistently misspell) build metacognitive awareness.
