A likely misconception
When counting backward becomes slow, model counting up from the smaller number instead. The distance from 8 to 13 is often easier to see than five backward steps.
Mark a small sample first. If errors share a pattern, pause the sheet and reteach with a model, number line, array or known fact. If errors are isolated, ask the learner to check those items using the inverse operation.
