Use ten-frames or drawings to rehearse making ten: for 8 + 5, move two from the five to complete ten, then add the remaining three.
Before independent work, solve one example together and ask the learner to name what each number represents. During practice, prioritize accurate reasoning over speed. A short set completed with an explainable strategy gives better information than a rushed full page.
A likely misconception
If a learner gives near-miss answers such as 8 + 5 = 12, separate strategy errors from recording errors. Ask them to explain the bridge through ten aloud.
Mark a small sample first. If errors share a pattern, pause the sheet and reteach with a model, number line, array or known fact. If errors are isolated, ask the learner to check those items using the inverse operation.
