Use a ceiling that keeps the learner thinking about addition rather than decoding unfamiliar place value. Ask for a strategy before asking for speed.
Before independent work, solve one example together and ask the learner to name what each number represents. During practice, prioritize accurate reasoning over speed. A short set completed with an explainable strategy gives better information than a rushed full page.
A likely misconception
Watch for counting every object from one. Encourage learners to start with the larger addend, then count on or decompose toward a friendly ten.
Mark a small sample first. If errors share a pattern, pause the sheet and reteach with a model, number line, array or known fact. If errors are isolated, ask the learner to check those items using the inverse operation.
A practical lesson sequence
