Pre-K Word Families Worksheets

Word families are a powerful tool for beginning readers because they reduce the decoding load — once a student can read '-at,' they can read cat, bat, hat, mat, sat, flat, and chat by simply changing the beginning sound. Teach word families alongside systematic phonics, not as a replacement. Start with the most common families: -at, -an, -am, -ap, -ad (short a); -it, -in, -ig, -ip, -id (short i); -ot, -op, -og (short o); -ut, -ug, -un, -up (short u); -et, -en, -ed (short e). Build words with magnetic letters or letter tiles on a pocket chart. Place the word family ending (-at) and swap out initial consonants, having students read each new word. This onset-rime manipulation builds phonemic awareness and decoding simultaneously. Use word family houses or flip books where students flip a strip of initial consonants while keeping the word family ending constant. Write short sentences using words from the same family ('The fat cat sat on a mat') to practice reading word family words in context. As students become fluent with simple word families, introduce families with blends and digraphs (ch-at, fl-at, sh-ip). Word family sorts — where students categorize a mixed list of words by their ending pattern — reinforce pattern recognition.
