Teach end punctuation first, connecting each mark to voice and expression. Read sentences aloud with different end punctuation and have students identify the mark by the reader's voice: statements end with a steady drop (period), questions rise at the end (question mark), exclamations are loud or emphatic (exclamation point). For commas, teach one rule at a time and practice it extensively before introducing the next. The most commonly taught comma rules in order are: commas in a list (I packed a shirt, pants, and socks), commas in dates (March 6, 2026), commas in compound sentences (I ran fast, but she was faster), and commas after introductory elements (After dinner, we played games). Use mentor sentences from read-aloud books to study how published authors use punctuation. For quotation marks, teach the dialogue format explicitly: new speaker = new line, comma before closing quotation marks, end punctuation inside the quotes. Have students practice punctuating already-written dialogue before asking them to write their own. For apostrophes, clearly distinguish between contractions (can't = can + not) and possessives (the dog's bone = the bone belonging to the dog). The most effective practice for all punctuation is editing — give students unpunctuated paragraphs and have them add the correct marks, then discuss their choices.
