Assessment, not surprise
A useful spelling check samples words that share the week’s focus and includes a small number of transfer words the learner has not memorized. That distinction helps show whether the learner understands a spelling generalization or remembers only a fixed list.
Read each word naturally, use it in a sentence, then repeat the word. Avoid stretching the pronunciation in a way that reveals letters not normally heard.
Learn from the errors
A total score is quick, but an error pattern is more actionable. Separate missed sounds, plausible but incorrect patterns, inflection errors and remembered irregular parts. The next lesson should respond to the most consistent pattern.
For correction, show the word briefly, discuss the changed part, hide it, and ask the learner to write it from memory. Copying while looking at the answer does not check retrieval.
