Teaching this skill
Recognition belongs inside meaningful reading.
High-frequency words deserve quick recognition because they appear so often, but the practice should still connect print, speech and meaning. Read each generated word in a short oral sentence, locate it in a familiar book, and then use the writing lines. The page is a focused rehearsal, not a substitute for connected text.
Ask the learner to read the word in a short sentence before tracing it. High-frequency word practice is most useful when recognition, meaning and use stay connected.
Watch for this pattern
A wrong answer is evidence, not a label.
Not every high-frequency word is fully irregular. Point out the spellings that match known sound patterns and isolate only the unexpected part for special attention.
Check a small sample before assigning another full page. Group similar errors, model the missing idea with one example, and then use a fresh short version to see whether the learner can transfer the correction.
